Our client, Mum's Providore Pty Ltd, is a Sydney-based fruit and vegetable wholesale supplier operating from Flemington Market. The business supplies fresh fruit, vegetables, herbs, leafy greens, seasonal produce and specialty items to cafes, restaurants, schools, food manufacturers, retail shops and commercial kitchens across Sydney.

Mum's Providore is seeking an experienced Quality Assurance Manager to oversee product quality, food safety, supplier assurance and quality control across its wholesale produce operations. This is a hands-on managerial role involving the assessment of incoming produce, supplier and product compliance, quality standards, traceability, handling and storage practices, customer quality requirements and continuous improvement across the business.

The Quality Assurance Manager will work closely with management, suppliers, warehouse personnel and customers to ensure that fresh produce is sourced, received, handled, stored and supplied in accordance with established quality and food-safety requirements. The position will also identify quality gaps, investigate non-conformances and complaints, recommend corrective actions and support improvements to processes and systems.

Qualifications and Experience Requirements

• Relevant bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification in Food Science, Food Technology, Quality Assurance, Food Safety, Agriculture, Horticulture or a related field.
• Minimum 1 year of relevant experience in quality assurance, food safety or quality management; experience in fresh produce, horticulture, fruit and vegetable wholesale, food distribution or other perishable food operations will be highly regarded.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities

• Develop, implement, maintain and continuously improve the company's food-safety and quality management systems, procedures and records.
• Establish and monitor quality standards for fresh fruit, vegetables, herbs, leafy greens, seasonal produce and specialty products received from suppliers.
• Monitor the quality and condition of produce throughout receiving, handling, storage, order preparation and dispatch activities.
• Manage supplier quality assurance processes, including supplier assessment, product specifications, quality expectations, documentation and follow-up of quality issues.
• Monitor supplier performance and investigate recurring quality issues, rejected products, shortages, damage or other supply-related non-conformances.
• Maintain traceability systems for incoming produce and customer orders and ensure records are accurate and readily accessible when required.
• Investigate customer complaints relating to product quality, freshness, condition, quantity or specification and coordinate appropriate corrective and preventive actions.
• Conduct root-cause analysis of product and process quality issues and develop corrective action plans in consultation with management and relevant personnel.
• Monitor handling, storage and stock-rotation practices to help preserve freshness and minimise deterioration, spoilage and product waste.
• Develop and monitor quality KPIs, including rejected produce, product wastage, supplier performance, customer complaints, non-conformances and quality trends.
• Prepare regular quality reports and provide management with analysis and recommendations arising from quality inspections, complaints and supplier performance.
• Review existing quality systems, procedures and workflows to identify gaps, inefficiencies and opportunities for improvement.
• Recommend changes to methods, procedures and workflows to improve produce quality, reduce waste and strengthen consistency of supply.
• Coordinate internal quality reviews and assist with external audits, inspections, certifications or other compliance activities as required.
• Ensure quality and food-safety procedures are communicated effectively to relevant personnel and provide guidance and training where required.
• Work closely with procurement, warehouse, delivery and customer-facing personnel to ensure customer product specifications and quality expectations are consistently met.
• Support the business in maintaining reliable supply by identifying potential product-quality or supplier issues before they affect customer orders.
• Promote a culture of continuous improvement, food safety, quality awareness and accountability across the business.

Skills Requirements

• Practical knowledge and experience in food-safety systems, HACCP principles and quality-control procedures.
• Demonstrated experience in supplier quality assurance, product specifications, traceability, non-conformance management and corrective actions.
• Experience assessing the quality and condition of fresh or perishable food products.
• Familiarity with applicable food-safety legislation, standards and regulatory requirements relevant to food businesses.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with suppliers, warehouse personnel, management and customers.
• Ability to balance hands-on quality assurance activities with managerial responsibilities.
