Media Advisor

Job description

Your new company
You will join a high-performing State Government communications team operating at the centre of a dynamic and fast-paced environment. Working closely with senior executives and key stakeholders, the team manages media engagement, supports government priorities and responds to emerging issues of public interest. This is an opportunity to contribute to high-profile media outcomes, provide strategic advice and work on matters that attract significant public and media attention.

Your new role
As a Media Advisor, you will play a key role in managing media enquiries, emerging issues and reputational risks in a fast-paced and highly visible environment. Working closely with senior leaders, you will provide timely and strategic media advice while supporting the delivery of government priorities.

You will develop and implement media and communication activities that enhance public awareness and stakeholder engagement. This includes preparing high-quality content across a range of channels, including media releases, web content, social media, speeches, briefing materials and internal communications.

A significant focus of the role will be managing reactive media. You will respond to media enquiries, coordinate responses to emerging issues, provide advice on potential risks and ensure accurate, consistent messaging under tight deadlines. You will also identify proactive media opportunities, contribute to communication and media strategies, build and maintain strong relationships with journalists and key stakeholders, and monitor media coverage to evaluate effectiveness and identify emerging trends.

This role requires exceptional judgement, strong political awareness and the ability to provide clear advice in high-pressure and high-profile situations. You will be a confident communicator who thrives in a dynamic environment and can balance competing priorities while delivering quality outcomes.

What you'll need to succeed

  • Tertiary qualifications in communications, journalism, public relations or equivalent experience

  • Demonstrated experience in media and communications, preferably within government or a complex stakeholder environment

  • Strong media relations experience, including reactive media, issues management and handling complex enquiries

  • Proven ability to provide strategic media advice to senior leaders

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills across traditional, digital and internal channels

  • Ability to develop clear messaging and tailor communications for different audiences

  • Strong stakeholder engagement and relationship management skills

  • Sound judgement, political awareness and a solutions-focused mindset

  • Ability to work effectively under pressure while managing competing deadlines

  • Valid National Police Check

What you'll get in return
You will receive a competitive hourly rate equivalent to an AS06 and the opportunity to work within a supportive, collaborative team. This role is for approximately 3 months, pending business requirements and offers professional development, exposure to senior stakeholders and meaningful work within State Government.
