The Department of Ophthalmology at Westmead is a multidisciplinary service providing outpatient and inpatient assessment services, ophthalmic surgical services and community based chronic care management. The multidisciplinary team is constructed of Medical, Nursing, Allied Health (Orthoptic), Administrative, Community based & Managerial staff to allow the service to be a successful high demand service seeing approximately 28,000 Outpatient occasions of service, 2,000 Surgical occasions of service and 700 Community based occasions of services per year.

This position will commence 1 July 2027.

The outpatient ophthalmology service sees patients with acute, chronic and emergency eye conditions. The service performs routine and emergency eye surgery and offers a 24-7 on call system for Westmead Hospital. Oculoplastic surgery services include management of eyelid malpositions, eyelid skin cancers, lacrimal surgery, management of thyroid eye disease, adnexal trauma and orbital surgery. There is collaboration with other medical and surgical specialties, including plastic surgery, Maxillofacial surgery, neurosurgery and otolaryngology.

Successful applicants will be expected to participate in the Ophthalmology clinics, perform operative procedures required to an appropriate standard, be involved in the supervision of registrars and residents and be involved in teaching and education.

Appointees may be eligible for credentialing and privileging across all other facilities in the Western Sydney Local Health District.

Conditions of appointment are in accordance with the Staff Specialists (State) Award.

Selection Criteria

  1. Possess or be eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia and Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmology (RANZCO) or international ophthalmology equivalent as provided for in the Staff Specialists (State) Award.

  2. Sound clinical knowledge in Oculoplastic, lacrimal & orbital surgery demonstrated through successful clinical practice in an environment appropriate to the requirements of the position

  3. Prior oculoplastic fellowship experience and research publications are highly desirable.

  4. Demonstrated skills and attitudes appropriate for practice as a Senior Medical Practitioner including:

Proven ability to work effectively and harmoniously with medical and other health services colleagues as part of a multi-disciplinary health care team.

Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with patients and colleagues.

Excellent organisational, supervision and collaboration skills with demonstrated ability to build respectful relationships.

Maintaining and developing knowledge, skills and professional performance to the level required for contemporary practice.

Experience and involvement in quality assurance activities and translation of research into practice to improve patient safety and quality.

  1. Demonstrated ability to manage time and resources efficiently and contributing to the effectiveness and efficiency of the health care system.

  2. Demonstrated aptitude for clinical leadership which is evidenced by:
