Job description

Your new company

Hays Recruitment are pleased to support the urgent recruitment of a Procurement Support Officer to work within the Queensland Government, starting ASAP, with the possibility of extension: based in Cairns.

Your new role

We are seeking a detail‑focused Procurement Officer to provide end‑to‑end procurement and contract support to operational teams across the region. In this role, you will play a key part in promoting procurement best practice, ensuring contract performance, and delivering value‑for‑money outcomes within agreed timeframes.

You will be a trusted point of contact for procurement advice, guidance and support, helping internal stakeholders navigate processes, policies and systems while maintaining a strong customer-centric focus.

In this role, you will:
  • Deliver a high standard of customer service to internal stakeholders, acting as a first point of contact for procurement‑related queries, feedback and advice on instructions, procedures, guidelines and standard forms.
  • Provide purchasing, procurement, administrative and contract management support to operational teams, internal customers and key stakeholders across the organisation.
  • Demonstrate flexibility by working across multiple procurement functions with varying priorities, workloads and outcomes.
  • Assist in the development, implementation and ongoing monitoring of procurement instructions, procedures, guidelines and standard forms, including document creation, updates and version control in collaboration with Quality Assurance.
  • Contribute to a range of procurement‑related projects, conducting research, assessing alternative strategies, processes and procedures, and preparing reports and recommendations as required.
  • Process orders and transactions including purchase orders, work orders, field release orders and similar documentation to support the delivery of goods and services across the region.
  • Support the development and delivery of procurement training and induction programs, including preparing training materials, coordinating contractor meetings, taking minutes, and assisting with the presentation of training sessions.
  • Maintain a strong and current understanding of legislative, regulatory and organisational procurement requirements, actively promoting procurement as a critical business function.
  • Contribute positively to team culture by demonstrating professionalism, collaboration and a proactive approach to continuous improvement.

What you'll need to succeed

To be considered for this position, you will need to have a sound administration background.

You will also need to be proficient in MS Word and MS Excel (skills testing will be required for this position). You will have strong attention to detail, accuracy and data entry skills. Understanding of Ellipse and SAP will be highly desirable.

  • Experience in procurement, purchasing, contract administration or a related administrative role.
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Clear communication skills and confidence working with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • A commitment to quality, compliance and value for money outcomes.
  • A professional, team‑focused mindset and willingness to adapt across different work areas.

What you'll get in return

In return, you will have an immediately available full-time role within the public sector based in Cairns, paying an attractive hourly rate of $51.12 + Super – you will work in a well-established, friendly, and supportive team and your contribution will be valued in the ongoing success of this busy department.
