Target Business Services is seeking a skilled and experienced Accountant to support the management, analysis and reporting of financial operations for an established Australian wholesale and retail business Outdoor Supacentre Pty Ltd. The position will support the integrity of financial information and provide accounting, financial reporting, analysis, budgeting and forecasting support to management and senior finance personnel.

Qualifications and experience

• Bachelor’s degree or higher qualification in Accounting, Commerce or a closely related discipline with substantial accounting content. CA, CPA or equivalent professional qualification is desirable.
• At least 3 years of full-time relevant professional experience in accounting, financial reporting, financial analysis or a related professional accounting position.
• Demonstrated experience in financial accounting, management reporting, budgeting, forecasting and variance analysis.
• Experience in preparing and analysing financial information and accounting reports in accordance with applicable accounting standards.
• Strong experience in cash-flow forecasting, financial analysis, balance-sheet reconciliations and internal financial controls.
• Knowledge of Australian Accounting Standards and Australian taxation requirements.
• Experience in supporting external audits and preparing audit schedules and supporting documentation.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to investigate financial variances and identify significant trends.
• Strong Excel skills, including financial modelling, data analysis and reporting; experience with Power Query and financial reporting/visualisation tools such as Power BI or Tableau is desirable.
• Experience in using an ERP system, preferably SAP. Experience with Employment Hero is desirable.
• Ability to work independently and effectively with senior finance personnel, management, auditors, advisers and operational stakeholders.
• Strong attention to detail, organisation and time-management skills.

The role reports directly to the Financial Accounting and Reporting Manager, who reports to the Head of Finance. While operating within this formal reporting structure, the role is expected to work independently with the Head of Finance and other senior members of the Finance team on financial reporting, analysis, forecasting, cash-flow management and other assigned finance matters.

Key responsibilities

• Contribute to the preparation and analysis of monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements and management reports, including lease accounting and related financial reporting, in accordance with Australian Accounting Standards and internal reporting requirements.
• Perform month-end and year-end close activities, including journals, reconciliations, financial reporting and investigation of unusual or material movements.
• Prepare and review balance-sheet reconciliations and investigate variances, reconciling items and unusual transactions.
• Apply and maintain accounting policies, procedures and internal financial controls and assist with improvements where required.
• Support maintenance and continuous improvement of accounting systems, financial reporting processes and internal financial controls, including identification and resolution of accounting/reporting issues.
• Prepare financial/accounting information required for statutory, regulatory and other external reporting.
• Prepare audit schedules, supporting documentation and financial reconciliations and liaise with external accountants, auditors, tax advisers and other professional stakeholders on assigned accounting, taxation, audit and financial reporting matters.
• Prepare and reconcile information supporting Business Activity Statements (BAS) and other indirect tax reporting requirements.
• Provide financial analysis and accounting information to support management’s assessment of operational/commercial decisions.
• Prepare budgets, forecasts and cash-flow projections and provide analysis to Head of Finance and senior finance management.
• Prepare and maintain short-term cash-flow forecasts, including a rolling 90-day cash-flow forecast, aligned with Long-Term Cash Flow projections and provide regular cash-flow reporting to senior finance management, including daily reporting to the Board where required.
• Assist Head of Finance with preparation/update of Long-Term Cash Flow forecast, including weekly updates where required.
• Conduct detailed variance analysis and investigate material differences between actual and budgeted financial results.
• Analyse costs, profitability, KPIs and other financial/operational performance indicators and report significant trends/movements to management.
• Manage assigned financial reporting, performance analysis and financial governance responsibilities, including reporting for Commercial Customers business unit where applicable.
• Support financial governance, risk, insurance and compliance activities as required, including review of assigned insurance coverage arrangements.
• Provide accounting oversight and backup support for payroll, related reconciliations and wage reporting.
• Prepare, review and validate weekly sales commission calculations and ensure accurate accounting and financial reporting of commissions.
• Support sustainability-related financial reporting and climate-related financial reporting and disclosures in accordance with applicable Australian Accounting Standards and regulatory requirements.
• Work collaboratively with senior finance personnel and operational stakeholders across business and relevant group/subsidiary operations.
• Contribute to process-improvement initiatives, reporting enhancements, system optimisation and finance transformation projects.
• Prepare ad hoc financial reports, financial analysis and accounting information for management as required.
• Perform other reasonable professional accounting and Finance duties consistent with the position as required from time to time.
