Visiting Medical Officer - Neurology Wagga Wagga Base Hospital

Shape the Future of Neurological Care in Regional NSW

About us

The Murrumbidgee Local Health District (MLHD) offers medical clinicians the opportunity to thrive in a dynamic, highly supportive regional health network. With more than 5,000 dedicated staff working across 33 public hospitals - including two major Base Hospitals, eight Acute Community Hospitals, and 16 Multi-Purpose Services - MLHD is a progressive organisation known for innovation, compassion, and excellence in patient care.

Serving a diverse population of approximately 245,000 people across 125,561 square kilometres, MLHD provides clinicians with unparalleled scope to expand their clinical practice, manage a wide variety of presentations, and make meaningful impacts in both small rural communities and larger regional centres. Stretching from the Snowy Mountains in the east to the plains of Hillston in the northwest - and along the Victorian border - MLHD offers not only remarkable clinical breadth, but also the lifestyle benefits of working in one of Australia's most scenic and welcoming regions.

What you'll be doing

As a Visiting Medical Officer (VMO) Neurologist, you will provide expert, patient-centred neurological services across the Murrumbidgee Local Health District, delivering high-quality assessment, diagnosis, treatment and ongoing management for patients with a broad range of neurological conditions.

Working across inpatient, outpatient and community-based settings, you will play a key role in delivering safe, evidence-based care while supporting continuity of treatment for patients throughout the region. The position offers the opportunity to contribute to clinical leadership, multidisciplinary care, service development, quality improvement and research initiatives.

You will also support the development of the future medical workforce through the supervision, teaching and mentoring of junior medical staff, medical students and other healthcare professionals. This role is ideally suited to a specialist neurologist seeking to make a meaningful impact within a progressive regional health service while enjoying professional autonomy and a diverse clinical caseload.

In accepting this position, you will uphold core NSW public sector values, including cultural diversity, equity, ethical practice, and contributing to a healthy, safe, and fair workplace.

Where you'll be working

Wagga Wagga Base Hospital is the largest referral hospital within the Murrumbidgee Local Health District and serves as a major healthcare hub for southern New South Wales. The hospital provides a comprehensive range of acute, medical, surgical, critical care and specialist services to a large regional population, supported by modern facilities and a highly skilled multidisciplinary workforce.

Located on the banks of the Murrumbidgee River, Wagga Wagga offers the perfect balance of professional opportunity and lifestyle. As the largest inland city in New South Wales, it combines excellent schools, universities, sporting facilities, vibrant food and wine experiences, and a thriving arts and cultural scene with affordable housing and short commute times. Residents enjoy easy access to national parks, river recreation, the Snowy Mountains and major metropolitan centres including Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra.

As part of MLHD's growing specialist medical workforce, you'll have the opportunity to influence the delivery of neurological services across a large and diverse region, helping improve access to specialist care for rural and regional communities while building strong clinical networks and collaborative partnerships.

Incentives

MLHD provides remuneration consistent with NSW Health statewide awards and determinations. Clinicians may also benefit from regional incentives, salary packaging opportunities, and flexible working arrangements designed to attract high quality medical practitioners to rural practice.
