Marine and Civil Maintenance Pty Ltd is seeking a qualified and experienced Accountant to join its finance team. The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, preparing financial reports, supporting statutory compliance and providing reliable financial information to management.

Key responsibilities
• Prepare and analyse monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements, management accounts and supporting financial schedules.
• Examine operating costs, project expenditure, revenue and financial performance, and provide findings and recommendations to management.
• Prepare month-end and year-end accounting entries, including accruals, prepayments, depreciation, provisions and account reclassifications.
• Maintain the integrity of the general ledger and perform detailed balance sheet, bank, intercompany and control-account reconciliations.
• Investigate financial discrepancies, identify underlying causes and implement appropriate accounting adjustments and corrective measures.
• Assist with the preparation of budgets, cash-flow forecasts and financial projections, and analyse actual performance against approved budgets.
• Prepare project-costing reports and analyse the allocation of labour, plant, materials and overhead expenses across projects and cost centres.
• Maintain and reconcile the fixed asset register, including acquisitions, disposals, transfers, depreciation and capital expenditure.
• Prepare and review payroll journals, payroll reconciliations and the allocation of employment costs to relevant projects and accounts.
• Prepare and reconcile Business Activity Statements, GST accounts, VAT returns, Fringe Benefits Tax calculations and related supporting schedules.
• Review accounting transactions to ensure appropriate tax treatment, account classification and compliance with applicable accounting standards and statutory requirements.
• Develop and maintain accounting policies, financial controls and reporting procedures to improve the accuracy and reliability of financial information.
• Support financial year-end reporting and coordinate the preparation of information required by external accountants, auditors and taxation advisers.
• Provide financial analysis and accounting advice to management to support operational planning and informed business decisions.
• Monitor accounts payable and receivable control accounts and oversee the accuracy of transaction processing performed within the finance function.

Qualifications and experience
• Bachelor’s degree or higher qualification in Accounting, Finance, Commerce or a closely related field.
• A minimum of one year of relevant professional experience in accounting or a closely related field.
• Strong knowledge of financial reporting, general ledger accounting, reconciliations and month-end processes.
• Sound understanding of Australian GST, BAS, payroll accounting and taxation requirements.
• Experience with accounting or project-costing software, preferably Jobpac or a comparable system.
• Strong Microsoft Excel and financial-analysis skills.
• High level of accuracy, analytical ability and attention to detail.
• Effective organisational, problem-solving and communication skills.
