About the Role
Café 1995 is seeking an experienced, skilled and passionate Barista to join our team in Darwin City.
This is a full-time position suited to an experienced hospitality professional with strong specialty coffee knowledge, excellent espresso preparation skills and the ability to consistently deliver high-quality beverages in a busy café environment.
The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate strong technical coffee skills, excellent customer service, sound knowledge of coffee preparation and equipment, and the ability to work effectively as part of a professional café team.
The Barista will also play an important role in maintaining our coffee standards, assisting less-experienced team members and contributing to the efficient day-to-day operation of the coffee bar.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
Preparing and serving espresso-based beverages including espresso, long black, flat white, latte, cappuccino and other specialty coffee beverages to a consistently high standard. Selecting, dosing and grinding coffee beans according to established recipes and brewing requirements. Operating commercial espresso machines and grinders safely and efficiently. Dialling in espresso grinders and adjusting grind size, dose and extraction parameters throughout the day to maintain coffee quality and consistency. Monitoring espresso extraction, flavour, temperature, milk texture and beverage presentation. Steaming and texturing milk to appropriate temperatures and textures for different beverages. Producing consistently high-quality latte art and beverage presentation. Preparing alternative milk beverages while following appropriate handling procedures. Preparing filter coffee, batch brew, pour-over and other brewing methods where required. Maintaining a sound understanding of coffee origins, processing methods, roast profiles, flavour characteristics and brewing techniques. Providing customers with information and recommendations regarding coffee, beverages and café products. Taking customer orders accurately and providing professional, friendly and efficient customer service. Operating point-of-sale systems, EFTPOS terminals and cash registers and processing customer payments. Maintaining an efficient workflow during busy service periods and prioritising orders appropriately. Monitoring coffee beans, milk, alternative milks and other bar supplies and advising management when stock requires replenishment. Receiving, rotating and storing coffee and beverage supplies appropriately. Maintaining cleanliness and organisation of the espresso bar, coffee preparation areas and customer service areas. Cleaning and maintaining espresso machines, grinders and other coffee equipment in accordance with manufacturer and workplace procedures. Completing daily opening, closing and cleaning procedures. Following food safety, hygiene, workplace health and safety and company procedures. Maintaining high standards of personal presentation and workplace cleanliness. Working collaboratively with kitchen, front-of-house and management staff to ensure smooth café operations. Assisting with opening and closing procedures as required. Supporting the training and development of junior or less-experienced baristas and café staff. Demonstrating correct espresso preparation, milk texturing, workflow, cleaning and customer service techniques to other team members. Monitoring beverage quality and assisting the team to maintain Café 1995’s established coffee recipes and service standards. Identifying coffee quality or equipment issues and reporting or resolving them appropriately. Assisting management with the implementation of new coffee products, brewing methods and seasonal beverage offerings. Participating in staff training, coffee tastings and quality-control activities. Performing other reasonable café and hospitality duties associated with the Barista position. Skills and Experience
The successful applicant should demonstrate:
Previous professional experience working as a Barista in a café, restaurant or similar hospitality environment. Strong practical knowledge of espresso preparation and commercial coffee equipment. Demonstrated ability to dial in espresso and maintain consistent extraction throughout service. Excellent milk texturing and latte art skills. Knowledge of specialty coffee, including coffee origins, processing, roasting and flavour characteristics. Understanding of different brewing methods and extraction principles. Ability to identify and correct common espresso and grinder issues. Strong customer service and communication skills. Ability to work efficiently and accurately in a high-volume café environment. Ability to remain organised and maintain quality during busy service periods. Strong attention to detail and commitment to beverage consistency. Good understanding of food safety, hygiene and workplace health and safety requirements. Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team. Ability to assist in training and mentoring less-experienced staff. Reliable, professional and punctual approach to work. Qualifications
Relevant hospitality, food and beverage or barista qualifications are desirable.

This is a permanent full-time position based in Darwin City, Northern Territory.
The successful applicant must be available to work a roster that may include early mornings, weekends and public holidays according to operational requirements.
Salary: $67,510 – $80,000 per annum plus superannuation, depending on qualifications, skills and relevant experience.
