About the opportunity We are a public health service 25min drive from the CBD and 40min drive from Geelong in a growth area of Melbourne. General Surgery is a core specialty at Werribee Mercy Hospital (WMH) with expansion and growth seen in the last few years. The position will assist the General Surgery consultants provide a range of services at WMH including emergency assessment and management, pre- and post-operative care, attending operating lists and the outpatient management of patients across a range of emergency and elective general surgery conditions. General surgery includes sub-specialities in Acute General Surgery, Colorectal, Upper Gastrointestinal/Hepatobiliary and Breast/Endocrine. Two or three fixed term contract is available - Feb 2027 to Feb 2028.
Clinical duties will be as a senior registrar/fellow, that includes support for the 2 accredited (SET) registrars, unaccredited registrars and residents in general surgery. This doctor will be directly involved in hospital-based management of patients, including emergency assessment and management, pre and postoperative care, attending/managing operating lists, outpatient clinics and managing the weekly general surgery MDT planning meeting and audit/quality assurance requirements of the unit. Provide high quality clinical care under the supervision, or with the support, of the consultant general surgery surgeons and participate fully in the activities of the department. The position would be for a doctor post fellowship level general surgery examinations and seeking to gain future entry into a General Surgery sub-speciality program. Will be required to participate in the oncall roster that may include some weekends The successful applicant will be employed as per the terms and conditions set out in the current Victorian Public Health Sector (AMA - Victoria) Doctors in Training (Single Interest Employers) Enterprise Agreement Research projects would be encouraged and supported as part of this role
ABOUT YOU: Essential:
Current and ongoing registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Agency (AHPRA) Applicants must be eligible for registration with AHPRA for positions of up to 12 months from starting date as a surgical registrar FRACS or post-FEX (Fellowship Examination) obtained in Australia or New Zealand. NOTE: for this position, we may consider applications for specialist supervision of international medical graduates (SIMGs) for
those who have satisfactorily fulfilled recent RACS Specialist Assessment and
currently working in Australia in a RACS approved position for their specialist recognition
having clear proof of successful progress in the pathway by supervisory reports. Please note that we will NOT consider any IMG applicants who do not meet the above criteria.
Prior experience as a general surgery registrar in a senior role A high standard of written and verbal communication skills in English A practical common approach to problem solving & trouble shooting Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team
Desirable:
Surgical training completed in Australia/New Zealand or equivalent country A desire to work in the area long term Willingness to participate in research Willingness to be involved in teaching and mentoring junior medical staff and medical students Skills in quality assurance, audit and rostering
